The Sculpture Years (Performance) : Henry Moore Institute, Leeds/Tate Liverpool, 26 March 2010. Conference paper for Sculpture and Performance, organised by The Henry Moore Institute. Duration: 20 minutes.

“This is the account of the life of a young artist who begins to explore time and subjectivity by videoing herself in her studio. Unsatisfied by this, she moves her studio onto the street. Like many young artists, Lucy started out making sculpture at art college . As the course progresses she considers the readymade before beginning to link what she is doing in the studio with the outside world. Lucy begins to make performance works that find their way into social situations that begin to test her limits… "

The Sculpture Years (Performance) was a fictional text about a young artist called Lucy. The content for the story was generated through a series interviews with performance artists: Oreet Asherey, Anne Bean, Helena Bryant, Lee Campbell, Gary Stevens, Hanae Utamara and The Vacuum Cleaner.

In my interviews each performer was asked the same set of questions. What were their earliest memories of making art? What was their route to performance and what had inspired them to make performance work? Finally, they were asked about their experiences both at college and directly after. The conversations were transcribed and written up as a conversation between two recent graduates: Lucy and her collaborator.
